For the Grooms – How to Pull Off a Killer Look at Your Wedding

We recently shared some ideas for our brides to consider when shopping for their wedding gowns. And we think it’s just fair that we prep the gentlemen too so they can also look great on their wedding day. After all, it is their day too. Keep these in mind as your look out for your wedding attire.

By the way, if you’re a gentleman and by any chance, you didn’t read the article on the wedding gowns, please do well to read it here before you proceed, so you can advise your lady.

So here we go…

Don’t overshadow the bride

Siding with the ladies again, aren’t we?

See, here’s the thing. It’s kind of an unspoken rule. While you may not have given much attention to your surroundings and how it will influence your clothes, the bride definitely has. So let her have her way. Speak to your fiancée about the style she’s going for so whatever you wear reflects a similar style without drawing attention from her. Aim at complementing your lady, not overshadowing her.

But here’s the great news – you get to outshine the groomsmen. In fact, you must outshine them. While the bride must be the most beautiful person at the wedding, you should target being the second most beautiful person. Your groom’s attire needs to be distinct from those of the groomsmen. When selecting, make sure that they match each other yet still get you to stand out. Everyone should immediately know you’re the groom.

Remember – Fit is Key

It’s very important that you keep it in mind – that fit is key to pulling off a killer look. Your clothes should be able to complement your body shape. When they are too sloppy – baggy, short sleeves, trousers too long, etc. – it gives you a bad look which people would definitely remember for years to come. And no, it wouldn’t be in a good way.

It is recommended that you consult with an expert. He would be in a better position to determine what would fit you best, according to your body shape. You may be getting something new or reusing something already in your collection. Some careful tailoring can make an old suit look exceptional. However, there may be the need to get a new suit if the old one doesn’t look just right. Either ways, make sure to not neglect your tailor.

Be willing to splurge, just a little

We know you’ve set a wedding budget and you’re doing all you can to stay within it. But for an attire that’s going to appear in most of the photos that will be taken on that day, it’s justifiable for you to want it to be great. And because of that, you would most likely spend more than you’re used to spending on a suit. Prepare adequately for that, budget-wise.

Hey, we’re not saying get something ridiculously expensive. But spending a bit more than you do on a regular day when purchasing a suit may be necessary. It’s all part of what makes your day special.

Think timeless

Once again, keep in mind that you’ll be, for the umpteenth time, looking at your wedding pictures and reminiscing in some years to come. And you know the feeling you get when Facebook reminds you of a picture you took or something you said some years ago. Sometimes the first thought that comes to mind is “What was I thinking?”

And, once again, we feel the need to mention that it’s not in a good way. It hardly is.

If you don’t want to be thinking along the same lines ten years after your wedding, go for a classic look. It isn’t recommended that you pick what is trending at the moment. After the phase passes, you may not be too proud of yourself later on. It is advisable to stick to colours that aren’t too bright.

Pay attention to your accessories too

Accessories are as important as the suit. They go a long way to add personality into an outfit so make sure you do a good job of getting the right additions. They should be a good match for your suit. Cufflinks help add a touch of sophistication to your attire. The pattern of your tie should also be influenced by the suit.

Be careful not to overdo it because it can make the suit lose the elegance of its original look. Try to keep jewellery to a minimum, to keep you looking simple and elegant. Experts advise that the cufflinks should be simple as well – gold, silver or onyx.
